this photograph was taken by famed photographer annie leibovitz just hours before john lennon was shot and killed in front of his nyc apartment building. it was used as the cover shot for rolling stone magazine at the request of lennon himself who told leibovitz: "you've captured our relationship exactly."
it's lucky that a photograph could capture their relationship because i don't think anyone has ever understood the dynamics.
i've never understood "beatle mania" & frankly the first time i heard yoko "sing", i said: 'this is a joke, right?' there have been thousands of photos snapped & articles written on these 2 people; the public drank in all the images & words.
this is the enduring image for me because it wasn't glamorous or some elaborate celebrity production, it was just 2 people who really didn't care what people thought because i think lennon had tired of trying to explain/defend himself early in the beatles career.
